These are the days you fall in love with one another.  The days you learn each other. The days when all they need is you and all you need is them too. It's also the time in life that's a real blur. You blink and you've notice time has changed this sweet babe in your arms.  


 

Plan ahead.


It's a good idea to have a little bit of a plan. Meaning like a story of the new baby. Maybe that's the family giving baby a sink bath.  I went with the purpose to document how he looks, details of his hands, feet, head, belly button, and knowing they change so fast not to miss the opportunity that's here today that'll be gone tomorrow.  

Let them.  


Let them be little. Give parents permission upfront to play with them and it's okay to come in and go. Take the lead or shy away. Let them and they'll be comfortable. Encourage  some silliness and don't stress if they are jumping off the walls. That's what they do. I'll photograph that for you too, and they'll be some of the favorites.

Don't forget Details.


The piles of diapers in this room will remind mom of the diaper shower that dad's work through them.  

The Room. The changing table or area. The decor. The way tiny clothes hang in the closet.

This is the home they brought the baby to. This is the pet at greets them at the door.

This is how big sister is with him. One second she wants to hold him, and the other she'll quickly dump him back to mom.  

Don't forget the size he is in your arms today and how little his feet are in your big grown up hands.

The Newborn Phase


This is the most fleeting 6 weeks of paternal leave imaginable. One day you're getting the nursery set up and the next have a baby and what feels like the 3rd day you're already going back to work. With all the JOY there's also long nights and brain-fog moments that you hope to remember but it's likely you'll forget. We all forget.  

I think that's what I like most about newborn in home photography. It's the opportunity to savor this phase of life for this sweet family.  


I meet Karley at church and her family the morning I showed up. She was nervous that her house wasn't really photography friendly, but that's my job :) So, let's not worry about that.  

The real beauty is the moments connected and that these will forever show the home that your brought your baby into. The dog that greeted you excitedly. The toddler doing toddler stuff and learning to share your time and attention now (for better or worse).  

These photos are yours to document what the nursery looks like and in doing so you remember and see the piles of diapers in the closet with the tiny clothes. A memory of how the co-workers through you a diaper showers and you have more than enough now for these newborn phase.  


You can feel the energy of the toddler and the want to but tired in the family. They're probably been up many times in the night and likely not with just one but with two kids.  Families are amazing aren't they.  

Why in home?

Newborns and toddlers are most comfortable in their own home. They warm up faster. They'll be themselves sooner, and in doing so you'll have authentic photos of your people.  Bring on the chaos. That's a feeling to capture and it'll too be lovely to look back on.
