A Military Retirement Story at Fort Sill, Oklahoma by Liz Perez.

 

A military retirement is never just about the person in uniform.

It is about the family who stood beside them.

It is about the years spent moving, making homes, starting over, saying goodbye, and finding their people along the way.



And sometimes, it is about standing inside a home you are about to leave and realizing just how much life happened there.


This is the story of LtCol Kirk R. Steinhorst, his wife Dani, their daughter Gwyneth, and the people who gathered at Fort Sill, Oklahoma to celebrate the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another.

The Home of a Military Family

This is where the story starts today. Here at home dressed and ready to go, but waiting on the clock. You can feel the nervous energy of the room.

Before they leave, I wanted to remember the house, too. The place that held so much of their ordinary life together.

Military life means home can look a lot of different ways. Sometimes it is a house on base. Sometimes it is a new town in a new state. Sometimes it is a place you only call home for a few years before packing everything up again. But home is not really the walls around you. Home is the people who make a place feel like yours. For Kirk, Dani, and Gwyneth, this chapter of life brought them to Fort Sill. And on this retirement day, their home was filled with family, friends, stories, hugs, and the people who had traveled from far away to celebrate with them.

The Details


Before the ceremony, even the details were waiting.

LtCol Joshua Mills held the folder that would soon be opened as he spoke and presented awards to Kirk and Dani.

When the Ceremony Begins



Slowly, the room fills with men and women in uniform. Family and friends find their seats while the adults move through the last few rehearsals and final details.

In the middle of it all, Gwyneth dances on her grandpa's toes, completely unaware that this ordinary little moment is happening just before such an important one. Guests are greeted, conversations settle, and then the room is called to attention.

The Weight of the Moment


The ceremony begins with the invocation and the National Anthem, and the room grows quiet. Awards are presented, words are spoken, and LtCol Steinhorst's years of service are recognized. But underneath the formality of the ceremony is something much more personal—the feeling of watching a chapter of life come to an end. Then comes The Watch, a familiar poem about those who stand watch and the responsibility passed from one generation to the next. In that moment, the meaning of the day feels a little heavier. This isn't simply the end of a military career. It is the closing of a season for a family who has lived it together. Years of service, sacrifice, change, and memories have led them to this room. And now, surrounded by the people who came to celebrate him, Kirk takes his place in the next chapter of his life.

Thank you, Dani and Kirk, for inviting me into such an important day and trusting me to document it for your family. Thank you for letting me photograph the big moments, but also the quiet ones—the hugs, the smiles, the congratulations, and the people who traveled so far to stand beside you. These are the photographs that will take you back to this day long after the ceremony is over and this chapter has changed. I hope when you look through them years from now, you don't just remember Kirk's retirement. I hope you remember how it felt to have everyone you love gathered together, celebrating the life you've built and the beginning of what comes next.

What Comes After the Watch


As The Watch is read, the meaning of the day settles in. There will always be someone standing watch, someone ready to carry the responsibility forward. For Kirk, his watch is changing. The uniform, the long hours, and the years of service are becoming part of the history he leaves behind. But what he gave does not end with retirement. It lives on in the family who stood beside him, in the people he served with, and in the memories made along the way. And now, after years of answering the call, he gets to turn toward home, toward Dani and Gwyneth, and toward whatever comes next.
